What to check before buying a used close contact saddles

A used saddle is only a bargain if it fits. Four things are worth settling first:

The tree. The frame is the one part that cannot be put right afterwards. Ask about its condition and its width before anything else.

Fit to your horse. The tree has to match your horse’s back, not the seat size that suits you. Those are two separate questions and both matter.

Seat size for you. Half an inch out is something you feel within a few minutes of sitting in it.

Leather and stitching. Surface marks are normal on a used saddle and are often why the price is good. Dry or cracked leather at the billets and stirrup leathers is not, because those carry load.

If you are unsure about any saddle on this page, ask us before ordering. We would rather answer the question than take a return.

Used Close Contact Saddles: common questions

Around eighty-five, all in stock. It is our largest block of used English saddles, and each one is a single saddle rather than a stocked line.

17" is by far the most common, then 17.5" and 18", with a few 16" and 16.5" and the occasional 19". Every listing states its seat size.

Henri De Rivel, Marcel Toulouse, Prestige, Antarès Sellier, Albion, Pessoa, Devoucoux, Courbette and Thornhill are the ones that come up most often.

A close contact saddle has a flatter seat and a more forward flap, which suits jumping and hunter work where you ride shorter. An all purpose saddle compromises between that and a dressage position. If you jump regularly, close contact is usually the better choice.
