The Redwood 2235 is Circle Y’s barrel saddle in chestnut, and underneath the redwood tooling the numbers are what make it a barrel saddle rather than a decorated western one.
Three of them do most of the work. The cantle is 5 inches – tall, which is what keeps you in the seat when a horse fires out of a turn. The skirt is 24 inches long by 13 deep, short enough to stay clear of the hips so the horse can shorten and drive through the pattern. And it is about 23 lbs, which is light: a ranch or roping saddle of the same seat size is nearer 35 to 40.
The horn is deliberately slim, a 3.5 inch neck with a 2 inch cap, so it stays out of your way through a turn instead of catching you. The 7/8 in-skirt C rigging keeps the cinch buckle low and out from under your thigh, which is why your leg lies closer to the horse than on a ring-rigged saddle.
Fit: the tree is the Cobra Barrel, and it comes in regular or wide. Seat sizes are 13.5, 14, 14.5, 15 and 16 inch. Pick the tree from your horse and the seat from yourself – in that order.
