The Bates Isabell is a dressage saddle designed with Isabell Werth, and it is built around one idea: putting the rider’s seat bones in the right place and keeping them there.
The changeable gullet is why these hold their value. The gullet plate can be swapped for a narrower or wider one, so the saddle can be refitted to a horse that changes shape – or to the next horse – without buying another saddle. A fixed-tree dressage saddle of this quality is a commitment to one horse’s back. This is not.
The seat is deep with a long, straight flap, which is what lets you ride with a long leg and a vertical body. That is the dressage position, and a jumping or all-purpose flap physically prevents it.
This one is 17 inch in black leather.
Before you buy: the gullet is changeable, but the panel and tree still have to suit your horse’s back. Send us a wither tracing and photographs and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
Best for: dressage from the early levels up, and riders who expect to change horses.
Not for: jumping, or general-purpose riding.
