A used 16 inch roping saddle from Lamb Saddle Co, built the way a rope saddle has to be: a rawhide-covered wood tree, which is what lets a saddle take the shock of a calf hitting the end of the rope without the tree giving way. Ralide and synthetic trees are lighter and cheaper; rawhide over wood is what ropers still ask for.

The numbers that decide the fit: a medium tree, suiting an average-withered quarter horse type, and a 27 inch skirt, which needs a horse with enough back length behind the shoulder to carry it. The 16 inch suede seat holds a rider in place when the rope comes tight, and the 3 inch cantle is low enough to get off in a hurry.

At about 29 lbs it is mid-weight for a roping saddle: heavier than a barrel saddle, lighter than the 40 lb ranch rigs. The D-ring rigging sits the cinch in the standard full position, and the hardware is stainless, so it will not rust out on you.
