What Makes a Cutting Saddle Different

A cutting horse drops, stops and turns fast, so a cutting saddle is built to let the rider sit deep and stay still. Most have a flat seat, a low cantle, a tall, slim horn to hold, and swells that help keep the rider’s legs in place.

The listings here that give a cantle height are 3″ to 3.5″, and the most common gullet is about 7″. Check each listing for the swell, horn and tree details.

Rough-out leather is popular for grip: 13 of our cutting and ranch cutter listings mention a rough-out seat, fenders or skirts, and 6 have a hard seat. As examples of the specs to compare, our STT cutting saddles list an 8 1/2″ swell height, a 3″ cantle and a 6 3/4″ gullet, while the Circle Y Bonham Ranch Cutter lists a 13″ swell and a 3 1/4″ horn.

Seat Size and Fit

  • Seat size fits the rider. 16″ is the most common seat in our cutting stock, followed by 17″, then 15″ and 16.5″.
  • The tree fits the horse. Check the bars and gullet on each listing, since a cutting saddle has to stay put through hard stops and turns.
  • Measure first. Our Saddle Size Guide shows how to measure seat and tree.

Cutting Saddle FAQs

A cutting saddle is a western saddle designed for cutting, where a horse separates a cow from the herd and holds it there. The saddle lets the rider sit deep and stay balanced while the horse drops and turns quickly. Most have a flat seat, a low cantle, a tall, slim horn to hold, and swells that help keep the legs in place. Many riders also use them for general cow work.

A cutting saddle is built mainly for arena cutting, with a flat seat, low cantle and slim horn. A ranch cutter takes a similar seat and adds features for everyday ranch work, often including a stouter horn for dallying and a sturdier build. In our stock, ranch cutters are mostly new saddles with a middle price of about $2,505, while cutting saddles are more often used or custom-made.

Seat size depends on your build. Measured from the back of the swells to the top of the cantle, most adults ride between 15″ and 17″, and 16″ is the most common size in our cutting stock, followed by 17″. Some riders prefer a slightly roomier seat in a cutting saddle for freedom to move. Then check the bars and gullet on the listing so the saddle fits your horse.

In our current stock the middle price for a cutting saddle is about $2,050. Older cutting saddles start under $500, while new ranch cutters from makers such as HR Saddlery and Scott Thomas mostly cost $1,560 to $3,165. Sought-after makers cost more: our Sean Ryon saddles run from about $1,800 to $3,600, and a Martin Matt Gaines Cutter is listed at about $4,780.

Often, yes. Many well-known cutting saddle makers build by hand in small numbers, so a used saddle can be the most affordable way to own one. Check the photos for a cracked or loose tree, worn rigging, a damaged horn wrap and dry leather, and confirm the seat size and gullet. Used saddles can be tried through our 14-day Test Ride Demo Program so you can check the fit.
