How Custom Ordering Works

The seven custom-order listings are starting points, not finished saddles. The photo on each one is for reference, and the listed price, from about $900, covers the base order rather than your final build.

1. Pick the maker and model. McCall, for example, takes custom orders on the A Lady Wade, 98 Wade, Northwest Wade, Wade Trail, McLite, Pendleton and Roper.

2. Choose your options. Billy Cook lets you select tooling patterns, oils, conchos, skirt designs and even hand-painted work; Martin and Circle Y offer their own option lists.

3. Ask us for a quote. Contact us for pricing, available options and the current lead time before you commit, as these vary by maker and model.

What You Can Choose on a Custom Order

Options vary by maker, but the listings here mention tooling patterns, leather colour and oil, conchos and hardware, skirt design, seat size and tree width, and, with Billy Cook, hand-painted designs. Double J saddles are built with Herman Oak skirting leather and custom-designed stainless steel hardware, and their listings cover seats from 13″ to 17″.

Is a Custom Saddle Worth It?

A custom saddle is worth it when a production saddle will not fit your horse or you, or when you want specific tooling, a hard seat or a particular tree. It costs more and takes time to build.

If you need a saddle now, a used custom-made saddle is often the better value: our used custom listings run from about $900 to $4,230, with a middle price of about $1,800, which is less than many new catalogue saddles.

Seat Size and Tree Fit

  • Give us the numbers. When you order, have your seat size, your horse’s tree width and gullet measurements ready.
  • Measure first. Our Saddle Size Guide shows how to measure seat and tree, and our semi quarter horse bars guide explains bar widths.
  • Buying used custom? Check the maker’s stamp, tree, rigging and leather in the photos, and ask us for more if you need them.

FAQs

Custom Saddle FAQs

A custom saddle is built or configured for a particular rider and horse rather than sold as a finished stock item. That can mean a saddle made to order by a maker such as Billy Cook, Martin, McCall or Circle Y, a made-to-order line like Double J where you choose the size, leather and hardware, or a one-off saddle a maker built for someone else that is now for sale used.

Start with one of our custom-order listings for the maker you want, then contact us. We will go through the model, seat size, tree, tooling, leather and hardware options, and come back to you with a price and the current lead time. The listed price is the starting point and the photo is for reference only, so nothing is finalised until we confirm your build.

It depends on the maker, the model and the options you choose, so we quote each order rather than list a single price. Our custom-order listings start at about $900 before options. Made-to-order Double J saddles in our stock run from about $3,215 to $4,315. Used custom-made saddles are the cheaper route, from about $900 to $4,230, with a middle price of about $1,800.

Often, yes. A custom saddle was built to one rider’s measurements, so the fit may not match yours, but a well-made one holds up for decades and costs far less used. Check the seat size, tree width and gullet against your horse, and look closely at the photos for a sound tree, solid rigging and supple leather. Ask us if you need more photos or measurements.

For new custom orders we work with Billy Cook, Martin, McCall and Circle Y, and we stock made-to-order Double J and Dakota saddles. Our used custom listings include saddles by Bob’s Custom, Dale Chavez, Bob Klenda, D.R. Rose, Johnny Ruff, Chris Herschberger, Mack Cowley, Custom Ranch Saddlery and Custom Saddlery, plus English saddles by Richard Castelow and Joseph Sterling and Sons.
