What Sets Billy Cook Saddles Apart

Genuine Billy Cook saddles are made in Sulphur, Oklahoma, and the maker’s stamp on the saddle reads “Billy Cook Maker, Genuine, Sulphur, OK”. Look for that stamp, especially on a used saddle.

Most are built as working western saddles. More than half of the Billy Cook listings here describe a rawhide-covered tree, and about 30 offer full quarter horse bars. That strength shows in the weight: ranch and wade models mostly weigh around 40 lb, while barrel saddles are lighter at around 25 to 30 lb.

FAQs

Billy Cook Saddle FAQs

Billy Cook saddles are well regarded as working western saddles, and most in our stock are built for ranch, roping or arena use. More than half of our Billy Cook listings describe a rawhide-covered tree, and many offer full quarter horse bars for wider horses. Like any saddle, a Billy Cook is only good for you if it fits your horse and suits your riding, so check the tree, bars and seat size before choosing a model.

Genuine Billy Cook saddles are made in Sulphur, Oklahoma. The maker’s stamp on the saddle reads “Billy Cook Maker, Genuine, Sulphur, OK”, which you can see in the photos on several of our listings. Other companies have sold saddles using the Billy Cook name, so when buying used, look for that stamp and the model number rather than relying on the name in the title alone.

It depends on the model, age and condition. In our current stock, used Billy Cook saddles range from about $755 to $3,865, with a middle price of about $1,620, while new models have a middle price of about $2,780. A used saddle with a sound tree, clean maker’s stamp and supple leather sits at the higher end. Cracked trees, worn rigging or dry leather bring the value down.

A wade saddle is a traditional ranch saddle with a slick fork, meaning no swells, and a tall horn for dallying, which gives the rider more room to move. Billy Cook makes wade saddles for ranch work, including Ultra Light and mule wade models. We have 17 Billy Cook wade listings, mostly priced around $3,000 new. The ranch and wade saddles that state a weight mostly come in around 40 lb.

It depends on the style. Across 82 Billy Cook listings that state a weight, saddles run from about 21 to 50 lb. Barrel saddles are the lightest, mostly around 25 to 30 lb, while ranch and wade saddles are heavier, mostly around 40 lb, because of their stronger trees, horns and rigging. If weight matters, look for Billy Cook’s Ultra Light models and check the weight shown on each listing.

Yes - and this is where the confusion starts. Billy Cook opened his shop in Greenville, Texas in 1953. Around 1981 the designs and rights to the Greenville name changed hands, and Billy Cook himself later moved his own saddlemaking to Sulphur, Oklahoma. Two separate businesses therefore carry the Billy Cook name today. Both make saddles; they are not the same company.

Look at the maker stamp and where it says the saddle was made - Greenville, Texas or Sulphur, Oklahoma - and check the serial number with the maker that matches. Fakes and mislabelled saddles do circulate, which is why buyers ask. Every Billy Cook we list has been physically inspected, and we describe what the stamp actually says rather than what a previous seller claimed.

Start from the horse and the job: roping, ranch, barrel, trail or pleasure, then tree width, then seat size for you. Billy Cook build across all of those disciplines, so the range narrows quickly once you know the first two. Send us a wither tracing and we will tell you which ones in stock fit.
